Jail for woman who stole to buy handbags
Duvelle Jeffrey, 31, funnelled $891,000 from The Comunicom Group of direct sales companies from 2005 to 2009 and splurged the funds on luxury handbags, perfume, jewellery and overseas trips.
Police found designer items worth $150,000 to $200,000 during a search of her home, including 48 Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Balenciaga handbags and Chanel shawls.
Employee Magnus Higgs, who was at the Victorian County Court in Melbourne for Jeffrey's sentencing, said he could now move on after Jeffrey was jailed for three years and nine months. "I feel closure today, (I) can definitely move on," he said outside court.
Chief Judge Michael Rozenes said when a Powerhouse International manager raised concerns about the lack of money in company accounts, Jeffrey said he needed to improve his business practices.
Kate McNab, director of The Comunicom Group, said Jeffrey hid her crimes by blaming other people for financial discrepancies and playing employees off against each other.
She estimated Jeffrey ultimately stole more than $1.1 million from the group,http://www.holisteroutlet.cc.
Ms McNab, who has three young children, said the events had put considerable stress on her family. "We're happy that justice is served and she can't do it to anyone else again," Ms McNab said.
Chief Judge Rozenes said Jeffrey's explanation for her theft was "because my family needed money and once I started, I couldn't stop".
Jeffrey had said she was sending money to her family in Singapore to repay her mother's gambling debts.
Chief Judge Rozenes said Jeffrey's offending was planned, prolonged and sophisticated. "Theft from an employee whilst in a position of trust and over an extended period of time is a serious breach of duty and a serious offence," Chief Judge Rozenes said.
